It is evident that the pandemic is having a detrimental impact on young people and their career progression. People under 25 are more likely to have been working in roles which were shut down during lockdown e.g. hospitality and leisure.
As a result, the Government has announced the Kickstart Scheme.
The Kickstart Scheme is a £2bn fund that’s part of the UK Government’s response to youth unemployment and the effects of the pandemic on youth unemployment. The Scheme is expected to run from November 2020 to at least December 2021 and will cover the entire UK.
The Scheme will create 6-month work placements aimed at those aged 16 to 24 who are on universal credits and are deemed to be at risk of long-term unemployment. These individuals will be selected by Jobcentre staff and supported by Jobcentre work coaches.
Funding available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus associated employed NI contributions and employer minimum automatic enrollment contributions.
